A six-piece outfit from Washington, D.C., The Groaning plays gothic rock culled from punk, Celtic and classical elements, weaving voice, strings, wind and rhythm into driving, soul-wringing musical tapestries. The Groaning have played with Faith And The Muse, The Awakening, The Last Dance, Ego Likeness, Hanzel Und Gretyl and Bella Morte. Founded in early 2003, The Groaning began with two members, Padraic and Charon, who realized the intricacies of their ideas needed more instrumentation. Four others fell into our laps, and constitute what is now our full lineup. We have decades of training and experience that come together to form an experience that you will remember.

Charon Powers Vocals
the principal melody writer, has years of choir and cantor training under her belt. Her vocal style has been likened to Eva O and Siouxsie Sioux.

Padraic Geddes Violin
is a classically trained violinist with a penchant for gothic rock, metal and Celtic fiddle tunes. He is also a member of the doom-metal band Todesbonden, and has performed in area symphony orchestras. His lyrics, tinged with sadness and hope, coax the listener to reach for the sublime.

Prosector Bass
hails from Ukraine. His love for Eastern European death/black/goth metal has led to a refined skill for writing intricate, yet powerful, bass lines that thrust the rhythm deep into the listener’s consciousness.

Claire Geddes Flute and Keyboards
is a classically trained flutist who adds haunting, yet down-to-earth, melodies to the upper registers. Her atmospheric keyboard melodies add just the right touch.

Arthur Graves Guitar
brings to the project a very dark, beautiful, gothic sound that is usually only found in the biggest names in gothic rock.

Paul "Gothfather" Fraunfelter  Drums
has been drumming since time immemorial, hence his honorary title. The wealth of his musical experiences fuel the rhythms that are the Groaning's heartbeat.
